Welcome!

Welcome to the website of Take a Stitch 2 Durham. We are an independent stitch group brought together by our love of stitched textiles, whether that be in traditional embroidery or contemporary works with mixed media. We hope you will enjoy browsing our website to see examples of our stitching, exhibitions and collaborative projects within the community.

We are currently working towards our 2024 Summer exhibition to be hosted by Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens. Open from 22nd June to 28th September (please note entrance fees set by Ushaw House apply to all visitors).

Below is a short slideshow featuring recent works from one of our members. We hope this inspires you to take up the needle and explore the wonderful world of decorated textiles.

Our current featured stitcher is Victoria.

Victoria developed a fascination with threads and textures by learning to knit as a child. The passion extended into surface stitching on fabric, fabric piecing and patchwork and rapidly became an obsession.

Hand and machine stitching on fabric have been enhanced by a knowledge of felt-making, paper-making, printing, painting & dying, and recently – embossed metal artefacts. Applying ‘extra things’ has also become a feature, such as quirky bits and pieces picked up in DIY shops, accessory shops and charity shops as well as recycled disposable items. Beads, bones, buttons and washers are all hoarded with a view to use in textiles. Amongst her participation in many exhibitions In 2015 Victoria exhibited a very large piece of work entitled 'Big Knitting' at Durham Lumiere.

We have created a gallery page of some of Victoria’s wonderful work so you can pause on each piece of work and read its creative story.

If you are inspired to take up the needle with our group, contact the secretary Penny, at tas2durham@gmail.com to pre-book a visit.
